Impact
Between 2009 and 2013, 8% of greenhouse gases emissions came from tourism, that share grew ever larger especially after COVID. Every year, it grows by 3% to 4%, meaning that in 20 years it will double.
While traveling in Africa, I saw firsthand the consequences of climate change on wildlife, landscape and especially its people. Droughts are more extreme, access to water is getting harder, etc. Cattle and wild animals are dying because of a lack of grazing pasture. Conflicts between locals and wildlife occur as they all battle for the same area.
When attending a safari, most of the participants arrive from another continent which means long haul flights thus airplane transportation is the biggest contributor to CO2 emissions.
While some detractors would discourage such workshops because of the carbon emissions emitted, I believe that responsible tourism has its place in the tourism industry and solutions can be found to circumvent its emissions and have a positive impact.
